DIY Plant Pens: The Longest-Lasting Solution
These DIY plant pens are the longest-lasting option we’ve found. They are completely weather-resistant and will last year-round outdoors indefinitely.

By using fade-proof, waterproof, outdoor labels on stainless steel pens, you can create a plant tagging system that truly lasts.

Make sure to review the notes below to ensure you choose the right labels and plant markers and apply them properly.

Fade-Proof and Waterproof Plant Tab Labels
Look for 10-gauge stainless steel plant pens. They are available in a variety of styles and sizes (10″, 15″, and 20″ heights).

Zinc pens are less durable but a more affordable option.
Check the plate size. We recommend 1 1/8″ x 3.5″, as this provides plenty of space for your plant tags.
The tags are made using a Brother P-Touch Label Maker with Brother Laminated Tape (waterproof, fade-proof, suitable for outdoor use). My label maker cost around $40 and has held up well over the years.

If your budget allows, consider a newer model like the Brother P-Touch D460BTVP (available on Amazon), which allows you to design labels on your computer and send them to the printer via USB or Bluetooth.

Make sure to purchase the correct labels for your specific label maker. I’ve only tested Brother brand labels in my Brother label maker, so I cannot guarantee other brands will work as effectively.

Features of the Labels
Fade-Proof and Waterproof: Look for labels explicitly marked as fade-proof and waterproof for outdoor use. When applied correctly, they will last for years.
Customizable: Depending on your settings, you can print up to three lines of text on one label.
Color Options: Brother labels come in a variety of colors for backgrounds and text.
For professional-looking tags like those used at plant nurseries, there are also advanced options available.

Proper Adhesion Tips
To ensure proper adhesion of the labels:

Clean the Plates: Use methyl hydrate (available in the paint section of most stores) to clean the plates of the plant markers. This removes any oil or residue. Let them dry completely before applying the labels.
Methyl hydrate typically costs around $3.69.
Apply Carefully: Apply the labels as directed, making sure not to touch the adhesive backing with your fingers or the cleaned plate surface. Oil and grease can compromise adhesion.
Alternatives to Label Makers
If you prefer not to use a label maker, here are some other options. While they may not last as long, they should still provide several years of durability.

Handwritten Labels
Use oil-based paint pens (also known as “garden pens”) on plastic.
These pens are available in various colors and tip sizes, but a standard black pen like this one works well.
Oil-based paint pens do not fade in sunlight or come off in four-season weather. Avoid water-based paint pens, as they won’t hold up outdoors.
Metal Tags
Soft metal tags, such as aluminum, can be embossed with a pen tip to mark the plant name.

For better visibility, trace the letters with a dark paint pen.
Black Metal Markers
Start with black metal plant markers, which often come with a white paint pen. Alternatively, colorful paint pens can be used. If you use oil-based paint pens, these markers should last outdoors for years.

Choosing the Right Plant Markers
Stainless steel plant markers come in various sizes, heights, and orientations. Consider the following:

Height: Choose a height that suits your garden’s layout and allows for easy reading without bending over.
Plate Size: Pick a size that fits the information you want to display.
Text Options: Decide whether to use botanical names, common names, or both.
Customization: Label makers allow you to select different fonts, font sizes, case styles, and even symbols.
Color Coding: Use label tape colors for coding different plant groups, such as perennials, annuals, and herbs.
Practical and Long-Lasting
While these plant markers may not be the most artistic, they are undoubtedly durable. With proper care, they can last for years, providing a reliable tagging system for your garden.
